Bikini Barista

There is a lot I could write about in this blog. Writing. Voice-acting. Production. They all pay the bills. But I’ve got something else on my mind…bikinis.

Some friends of mine are in a Seattle pop-punk band called Quickie. They wrote a tongue-in-cheek song about the Northwest phenomenon of drive-thru coffee huts whose gimmick is that the espressos and double-tall-mochas are served by girls in bikinis. And lingerie. And pasties.

The coffee stands have caused quite a commotion here in Washington State. Some have even crossed the line from tacky to illegal. So it was only natural that somebody would write a song about it. Isn’t that what Woody Guthrie would’ve done? Like folk music, and hip-hop, punk music often makes commentary on the world around us. Even radio friendly pop-punk can bear witness. And poke fun.

So Quickie wrote the song “Bikini Barista.” I helped them shoot the video at real-life coffee-vixen headquarters, Cowgirls Espresso in Auburn. Its girls, guitars, and cars! Not high-art, but enjoyable nonetheless. I co-produced the video with a terrific editor named Bryce Schoonmaker. And viola! The video has close to 20,000 hits as I write this. Not only that, but the local-and some national-media outlets have featured stories about the video on their websites, in their newspapers, on the radio and even on TV. It’s been fun to watch this clip we made on a shoe-string budget grow each day in popularity. It’s only been two weeks. 20,000 views with no push from a major label? Seems pretty good to me!

Without further ado, here’s the video. Enjoy!

Dan
